In the middle of my week in Singapore I went to Indonesia I ended up in a place called Tanjung Pinang, which isn't exactly tourist-trodden There was fuck-all to do there Except gawk at differences And listen to the roofs expand and contract It was great, though, to feel like I was actually in another country One where you take motorcycle taxis everywhere And you're only thing whiter than the boats Everyone yells 'Hello sir hello!' or whatever they know in English And the town goes on whether you're there or not Everything's on stilts And the food! If Singapore is a massage, Tanjung Pinang is the happy ending.

I went to Singapore randomly last week My conclusion after five days: Singapore's hella weird There's stuff everywhere, just not stuff you want to do. The architecture's all Matrixey and sterile, and the people are champion shoppers. But it's all sort of nondescript. Mostly you wait around to get hungry so you can eat again. And play air-conditioning hopscotch. The city has the temperature and humidity of a fucking uterus. I kept picking the anchovies out of my soups. Bad foreigner! Little India has thousands of foreign workers. All men. All mustache. All holding hands. The only way you can tell its Asia is because the food is weird. This temple was actually pretty cool. You gotta love the religions that allow technicolor. I took a picture of this broad because she sorta looks like me. Singapore has highways the way Amsterdam has canals. These roofs are left over from when Singapore was an actual place. Chinatown. Eat, walk, swelter, shop, repeat. You can stop at 7-11 for florescent Asian drinks that smell like dog food. Or listen to Singapore brag about how safe it is. 'We cane hoodlums!' should be on the welcome signs This dude was selling TP, but he was passed out at his post. So I stole TP. New low. It all feels like some hyper-signed alt-Asia. I took a nature walk in Singapore's football-sized patch of greenery. It's the only thing without AC The revolution will be shopping mall'd. And elevator'd We went 70 floors up to gaze upon the consumadise In spite of my bitching, I actually had a great week. Singapore's interesting! It's like Las Vegas without gambling or entertainment or nightlife. That takes place in an airport.
